About the Role:
The Mail Clerk is responsible for the primary and secondary sorting of mail from the United States Postal Service (USPS) and internal mail from the Silver Spring (SSMC) campus and the Washington Metro area. Each clerk is responsible for making two daily mail deliveries and pick-ups to the offices within the SSMC building complex. During these deliveries, outgoing mail will be picked up by the clerk and brought back to the central mailroom for processing. The Mail Clerk will often serve as a shuttle driver as requested. Shuttle drivers are responsible for making two or three daily mail deliveries and pick-ups to the offices within the Metropolitan area.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for
metering outgoing mail by following the USPS Standards and Procedures set
forth.
- Responsible for delivering boxes and controlled mail such as Registered,
Certified, and Express mail within a single complex.
- Responsible for
attending to customer needs at the Customer Service window and is required to
provide excellent customer service.
- Ensure that the mail is picked up and
delivered on-time.
- Fold letters, circulars, or other documents and insert into
envelopes for distribution and other duties as needed.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Must be capable
of communicating in and understanding verbal and written English.
- Must be able
to lift and handle heavy boxes and packages weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Must be
capable of basic arithmetic calculations such as addition, subtraction, division
and multiplication.
- Must be capable of using Microsoft word and Excel.
- To ensure the timeliness of the operations, punctuality and excellent attendance are required.
Minimum Education and Experience
Required:
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must possess a
high school diploma and a minimum of 6 months mail processing and delivery
experience.
- Must have a valid driver license and a clean driving record.
- Must
be able to obtain a public trust clearance.
- Must be able to obtain Mail piece
Design Consultant certification within 6 months of hire and maintain
certification during employment.
